Section 508 Compliance

Do your Research

As communications technology becomes more sophisticated, accessibility of information and data for persons with disabilities can be a reality. In Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, amended by Congress in 1998, the United States federal government defined specific requirements and features for telecommunications and information systems to provide complete accessibility.

The goal of Section 508 is to support an individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily, including those individuals with disabilities. Section 508 also helps to stimulate technological developments and innovation to achieve information accessibility.

Organizations should be aware of Section 508 requirements when doing business or interacting with government agencies. Under Section 508,
all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology must comply with accessibility requirements. Disabled employees and members of the public must be provided with access to information that is comparable to the access available to others.

While the law specifically applies to the United States federal government, several states and many other public organizations refer to Section 508 requirements in their own laws and regulations targeted at providing equal access to persons with disabilities.
